GIS Electric System Geodatabase Conversion & Support
Project Description
For many years, Alpena Power Company (APC) maintained electric system mapping in hand-drawn mylar format. To conserve and maintain the mapping more efficiently and move towards a more robust and central information system within APC, the company committed to realizing the advantages of GIS for their operations. They looked towards ESRI's geodatabase and the ArcGIS software suite for the mapping and analysis portion of their enterprise system.
InfoGeographics was contracted to design and transform the existing electric system analog maps as well as provide training and look at short and long-term applications of the system.
Project Responsibilities
InfoGeographics followed a structured methodology to accomplish the project goals. These entail the following steps and methods:
Geodatabase Design
- Utilized UML-based geodatabase design using Visio Enterprise.
- Ensured compatibility with the ArcGIS Electric Utility Geodatabase Model, easy maintenance of the system, and the desired network routing components and connections to other database systems.
Conversion of the Existing Mylar Maps
- All mylar maps were converted into the robust Geodatabase design.
- Extensive quality control and testing techniques were applied to the conversion effort.
Training & Miscellaneous Support
- Training of APC staff to maintain and improve the Electric System Geodatabase and GIS mapping repository.
GIS Applications Functional Specification
- Investigated and identified short and long term GIS Applications.
GIS Data Conversion to Milsoft via MultiSpeak
- Developed translation and quality control scripts and procedures to iteratively translate the geodatabase system elements and data into Milsoft electric system analysis software via the MultiSpeak format.
