SEMCOG GIS, Michigan
Enterprise GIS Database & Support
Project Description
The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) provides many services for government organizations in its seven county region, which includes the Detroit metropolitan area. Some of the most important services are related to GIS, and SEMCOG has committed to implementing Enterprise level GIS to support these activities. The GIS data was traditionally stored and maintained in separate coverage and shapefile based models and SEMCOG recognized the need to migrate this valuable information into a fully functional and modern Enterprise GIS database management system and to enhance some of its core GIS applications.
InfoGeographics was contracted to assist in design and implementation of the central GIS Enterprise database system and also to modernize and enhance an existing application for automated map production.
Project Responsibilities
InfoGeographics has followed a structured methodology to accomplish the various project goals. These entail the following steps and methods:
GIS Enterprise Implementation
- System and architecture planning served as a basis for core Enterprise GIS implementation. ArcGIS Server/ArcSDE based enterprise database infrastructure has been implemented with IGI assistance.
- A full-fledged Geodatabase Design was developed and delivered that encompasses extensive data over the entire seven county region.
- Coordinated assistance loading and verifying the existing data into the Enterprise GIS repository was provided.
Training Support
- Extensive training has been conducted by IGI at many different levels to support the central Enterprise GIS system. This training facilitates administration and maintenance of the system and geodatabase.
GIS & Applications Support
- IGI assisted SEMCOG with enhancements to an existing ArcMap enabled Map Tool that streamlines the production of consistent, cartographically pleasing map layouts. This upgrade was carried out using VB/ArcObjects with a User Guide also being developed and delivered.
- IGI continues to support SEMCOG's GIS program on an as-needed basis.
