Geodatabase Design

The ability to store GIS data, both spatial and tabular, in a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) while taking advantage of the powerful capabilities of that database technology, was a quantum leap forward for GIS. Implemented by ESRI, this platform is called the "Geodatabase" and works with many of the popular RDBMS systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Access (Jet Engine), and others. InfoGeographics has adopted and embraced the use of this state-of-the-art approach to store and maintain GIS data since its inception.

A key factor to successfully using the geodatabase is to develop a design for the data and underlying database that fits existing data, ties to legacy databases, is easy to maintain, and meets the requirements of planned applications and data output.

InfoGeographics staff have designed and built geodatabases with a wide range of size and complexity in the areas of Property/Cadastral, Addressing, Transportation, Utility (Electric, Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater systems), Business Data, and more that unlock the potential of this advanced database technology.
